Students at Marfa ISD are growing lettuce using a technique known as flex farming, part of a hands-on educational program supported by the Big Bend Conservation Alliance.
Flex farming uses portable vertical hydroponic systems, allowing plants to grow year-round with minimal space and water. Through the program, students learn the full process of food production, from seed to harvest, while gaining exposure to sustainable agriculture practices.
According to the Big Bend Conservation Alliance, the initiative helps make gardening more accessible and teaches students practical skills related to food systems, nutrition, and environmental stewardship.
The organization noted that programs like this are made possible through community support and donations, which help fund conservation and education efforts across the Big Bend region.
