Brewster County deputies discovered a discarded backpack containing drugs and paraphernalia Tuesday morning along Highway 385 south of Marathon, according to the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said a deputy was alerted to the backpack after it was found abandoned along the roadway. Upon inspection, deputies determined the backpack contained packaged marijuana, THC wax and multiple items of drug paraphernalia.
Officials said the backpack did not contain identifying information that would allow deputies to determine ownership or return it to a rightful owner.
The sheriff’s office suggested the contraband may have been discarded intentionally, possibly by someone attempting to avoid detection while traveling through the area or before approaching a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint.
No arrests were reported, and authorities did not release an estimated value of the drugs.
In a statement, the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office reminded travelers that bringing illegal substances into the county — or abandoning them along roadways — is unlawful and unnecessary.
The investigation remains ongoing.
