Alpine Animal Services is highlighting Freya as its Pet of the Week during the holiday season, offering a reduced adoption fee in hopes of finding her a permanent home.
Freya’s adoption fee has been lowered to $50, half the normal cost. The fee includes her spay procedure, heartworm testing and all follow-up treatment, microchipping, and all vaccinations.
Freya came into the shelter on September 16 after being found running loose within the city limits of Alpine. Shelter staff said they were surprised she was never reclaimed, noting that she has been a gentle and well-mannered dog during her time in care.
Shortly after arriving, Freya tested positive for heartworm and began treatment immediately. Shelter officials said the medical treatment is the primary reason she has remained at the shelter for several months. She has now completed treatment and is cleared to go home.
Although an adoption had previously been planned, it fell through, leaving Freya available once again.
Staff report that Freya has shown positive behavior throughout her stay. While she has not yet participated in formal dog play groups, she walks calmly past other dogs and approaches neighboring kennels in a relaxed manner. She has been friendly with everyone she has met, walks well on a leash, and appears to be house trained, consistently keeping her kennel clean.
Shelter staff also say Freya knows basic commands such as “sit” and offering her paw, and describe her as gentle, smart, treat-motivated, and attentive.
Those interested in meeting Freya can visit Alpine Animal Services Shelter, located at 2900 Old Marathon Highway in Alpine.
