Davis Mountains State Park announces slate of guided hikes and programs for early January

Davis Mountains State Park has released its program schedule for the first half of January, offering a series of guided hikes, educational programs and evening events for visitors.

The schedule begins with the park’s First Day Hike on Jan. 1, a mile-high hike meeting at the CCC Rock Lookout at the far end of Skyline Drive. The hike runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon and covers about 2.5 miles on a rocky trail, with a paved option available.

Other offerings include guided tours of the Indian Lodge, evening hikes timed with the full “wolf” moon, and stargazing programs focused on Far West Texas’ dark skies. Several events meet at the CCC Rock Lookout, while others begin at the park’s interpretive center or the Indian Lodge gift shop.

The park will also host a “Hike with Homeless Dogs” in partnership with Grand Companions, a local no-kill animal shelter, giving visitors the chance to walk shelter dogs on an easy one-mile route. Additional programs include a morning ranger-led hike, an art activity designed for all ages, a homeschool-focused nature classroom, and educational talks on astronomy and local wildlife.

One of the programs highlights Barbary sheep, also known as aoudad, focusing on their presence in the Davis Mountains and their impact on the region.

Park officials note that some activities involve uneven terrain, steps or nighttime conditions, and participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and bring water, flashlights or binoculars as appropriate. Certain programs have attendance limits or require advance registration.

More details about each event are available through the Davis Mountains State Park events listing.
