Sul Ross International Professor Awarded Research Grant for Honey Studies

Dr. Ferhat Ozturk, a newly appointed international professor at Sul Ross State University, has been awarded a $2,000 research grant from the Santa Clara Bee Guild in recognition of his contributions to honey research and his work advancing the study of honey’s medicinal and biological properties.

The grant will support the launch of new honey research initiatives at the Sul Ross State University International campus in Eagle Pass, including the establishment of a Honey Analysis Lab and a beekeeping apiary.

Ozturk previously led honey research efforts at the University of Texas at San Antonio and delivered two virtual presentations this year for the Santa Clara Bee Guild on the medicinal properties of honey and the biological activity of Northern California honeys. Those presentations helped establish a collaborative relationship between Ozturk and the guild, ultimately leading to funding support through the organization’s nonprofit arm.

Research initiatives at Sul Ross State University will focus on evaluating the health benefits and biological activity of honey while supporting local and regional beekeeping communities through scientific analysis and applied research.
