Alpine will once again become a hub for nature lovers, researchers, and families when Wildlife Weekend 2026 takes place January 30 through February 1, offering three days of free, educational programming focused on the region’s wildlife and ecosystems.
Organized by the Borderlands Research Institute in partnership with Visit Alpine and local organizations, this year’s Wildlife Weekend will spotlight owls, with a special emphasis on how elusive species interact with the Davis Mountains’ unique sky island ecosystems. Featured species include the Mexican spotted owl, northern saw-whet owl, and flammulated owl.
Throughout the weekend, attendees can participate in a wide range of activities designed for all ages. Programming includes guided hikes led by subject-matter experts, presentations and panel discussions on current wildlife research, and nature filmmaking and photography workshops. The event also features hands-on and family-friendly experiences, such as a nature scavenger hunt, interactive displays at the Alpine Farmer’s Market, and five-minute cartoon animal drawings by renowned local artist Chris Ruggia.
Additional attractions include a photo contest open to the public and wildlife-themed offerings from local shops and restaurants in downtown Alpine, encouraging visitors to explore the community while engaging with conservation-focused programming.
Wildlife Weekend is designed to promote environmental awareness, scientific literacy, and community engagement while highlighting the natural richness of the Big Bend region. All events are free and open to the public.
