Davis Mountains State Park Honors Longtime Staff Members Verna Dutchover and Stephanie Rubio

Davis Mountains State Park and Indian Lodge are celebrating two of their most dedicated team members — Verna Dutchover and Stephanie Rubio — whose decades of service have left a lasting mark on the park and its visitors.

Verna Dutchover, who has served as office manager for nearly 25 years, will be retiring at the end of October. Known for her sense of humor, work ethic, and leadership, Dutchover has been a cornerstone of daily operations. A Fort Davis native, she fondly recalls childhood memories of hunting Easter eggs along Keesey Creek during visits with her grandparents. Park staff say her authenticity, laughter, and dedication will be deeply missed.

Stephanie Rubio joined Indian Lodge in 2001 and has served as assistant superintendent for most of that time. Rubio was instrumental during the 2011 Rock House Fire, helping to safely evacuate guests — a role that earned her recognition in a TPWD video. Her favorite spot at the lodge is the balcony overlooking the pool and canyon below. Rubio says she loves seeing families return year after year, building memories that span generations.

“We’re lucky to work alongside these two jewels,” TPWD staff wrote. “Their dedication has made the Davis Mountains a more welcoming and memorable place for all who visit.”
