Marathon Public Library Wins 2025 Beacon Award for Rural Impact

The Marathon Public Library has been honored with the 2025 Beacon Award for Rural Impact – Big Bend Region, recognizing the library’s exceptional contributions to education, access, and community engagement in rural West Texas.

The award, presented by the Nonprofit Management Center of the Permian Basin, celebrates nonprofits making a meaningful difference across the region. This year marks the introduction of the Rural Impact category, designed to highlight organizations driving positive change in small communities.

The library’s Director of Development and Board President attended the Beacon Awards Luncheon in Odessa to accept the recognition on behalf of the staff, board, and the Marathon community. Along with the award, the library received a $1,000 grant to support its continued programs and outreach.

“This nomination is a tremendous honor and a meaningful validation of the work we do every day,” library representatives said in a statement. “Rural libraries are not secondary or small — they are lifelines for their communities.”

The Marathon Public Library, which also houses the town’s History Museum, serves as a vital cultural and educational hub for residents of Brewster County and the greater Big Bend area. The library’s programming includes children’s literacy activities, local history exhibits, and community events that strengthen connections across the region.

The Nonprofit Management Center recognized numerous other organizations across the Permian Basin for excellence in leadership, collaboration, and impact.
