The Marathon Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) responded to a structure fire on North 8th Street at approximately 8:30 p.m. on October 10, containing the blaze before it could spread into a home’s main attic.
According to the department’s report, four apparatus and 10 personnel were dispatched. Upon arrival, firefighters found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames under a covered carport, with fire extending into the attic above. Several bystanders were attempting to control the flames using garden hoses.
Engine 41 initiated an aggressive attack on the attic and vehicle, achieving a quick knockdown. Brush 41, 42, and 43 assisted in preventing the fire from spreading to the residence. Firefighters then opened the attic from below to expose and extinguish remaining hotspots.
Thanks to the rapid response, the blaze was contained before reaching the home’s shared attic, avoiding a larger incident. Crews cleared the scene at 11:05 p.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, though officials say it appears to have started in the vehicle.
MVFD extended thanks to Brewster County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Thomas, Zwahr, and Prieto, as well as Tim Roberts, Alexis Roberts, Jesse Marta, and other bystanders who assisted before and during the response.
“Every one of you makes this an amazing town to live in and serve,” the department wrote in a statement.
