A second Marfa ISD teacher, Juan Tarango Martinez, has been arrested on charges of an improper relationship with a student, further intensifying community concern following the district’s recent announcement of another teacher’s arrest.
The district confirmed both arrests in the past three weeks and emphasized that swift action has been taken in each case, in cooperation with law enforcement and child protection agencies. Interim Superintendent Arturo Alferez called the alleged misconduct “absolutely unacceptable” and assured families that “at this time, no student is in danger, and all students are safe.”
District Response
In light of the back-to-back arrests, Marfa ISD is implementing a comprehensive zero-tolerance action plan that includes:
Mandatory training for all staff on professional boundaries and workplace conduct. Student training to recognize and report inappropriate behavior. A confidential reporting system for parents and students. Guidance materials for families to help initiate conversations at home.
The district is also expanding counseling and support services to help students and families process the situation.
Community Engagement
Superintendent Alferez will host a Town Hall Meeting at the Shorthorn Gym in the coming days to address parents, staff, and community members directly. The district has also encouraged the use of its Quick Tip Anonymous Reporting System at marfaisd.com/forms/quicktip.
“These incidents are deeply upsetting,” Alferez said. “But our commitment is clear: student safety, transparency, and accountability come first. Together, we will move forward as a stronger, safer Marfa ISD.”
