Sul Ross launching fall science seminar series

Sul Ross State University will host a new science seminar series this fall, featuring research talks from faculty and invited experts.

The series, organized by the Office of the Provost, grew out of the “Research Forum for the Sciences” held in spring 2023. The goal is to showcase expertise across the sciences at Sul Ross, inspire student interest in research, and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration.

Seminars are open to students, faculty, staff, and the wider Big Bend community. Each will be held in Warnock Science Building, Room 201, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., with informal mixers afterward at The Ritchey.

The schedule includes:

  • Thursday, Sept. 18 — Dr. Erika Blecha, archaeologist, Center for Big Bend Studies: “No Bones About It: Understanding the Intersection of Past Environments and People Through Animal Remains.”
  • Tuesday, Oct. 14 — Dr. Justin French, Big Game Specialist, Borderlands Research Institute and Assistant Professor of Wildlife Management, Department of Natural Sciences: “Big Scales and High Stakes: Quantitative Approaches in Big Game Management.”
  • Thursday, Nov. 20 — Dr. Elizabeth Measears, professor of geology, Department of Natural Sciences: “Geology and Math: Flexibility in Research and Teaching.”
