The Sul Ross State University football team will open its 2025 season on the road in a history-making contest against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, August 30, at 7:00 p.m. inside Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium.
The matchup will be the first football game in UTRGV history, adding unique significance to the Lobos’ season opener.
The 2025 campaign also represents a milestone for Sul Ross State, as the program competes in the final year of its NCAA Division II provisional period as a member of the Lone Star Conference. The Lobos continue to work toward full NCAA DII membership and future postseason eligibility.
Lobos Preparing for the Challenge
First-year head coach Lee Hays leads a roster blending returning veterans and promising newcomers. The offense is anchored by junior lineman Travyon Young, named an LSC Player to Watch, and quarterback Andrew Martinez, who enters the season ranked fifth in school history in career completions (296), passing yards (3,795), and touchdowns (30).
On defense, senior defensive back Brendon Martin leads the unit after tallying 78 tackles, three interceptions (including a pick-six), and earning All-LSC Second Team honors in 2024.
UTRGV’s First Step
Head coach Travis Bush guides the Vaqueros into their inaugural season. With no game film or prior results, UTRGV’s roster of transfers and young talent presents an unpredictable challenge for the Lobos.
