Alpine cross country opened its season Saturday at the Tall City Invitational in Midland, with both middle school and high school teams competing at Hogan Park.
The Lady Bucks placed seventh out of 18 teams in the Division 2 race. Freshmen Hallie Wood and Iliana Dominguez led the way with 19th- and 29th-place finishes in a field of 137 runners. Alice Saunders, returning from injury, cut two minutes off her previous time to place 33rd. Junior Molly Garrett finished 35th and freshman Athena Villanueva 73rd.
Senior JP Prieto led the boys in Division 2 with a 35th-place finish out of 190. Jace Armendarez placed 47th and Zane Perkins 58th, followed by Barry Young and Raul Renteria as the Bucks finished 12th among 22 teams.
The middle school boys placed seventh as a team against larger schools, led by eighth grader Roman Holguin in fifth place. Teammates Prieto, Edwards, Warren and Brito also finished in the top 50 of 125 runners. On the girls’ side, eighth graders Georgia Muratori and Zoe Munoz placed 11th and 22nd, respectively, in a field of 105.
Alpine is scheduled to race next at Crane on Saturday, Aug. 30.
