Cooking Up Culture in El Paso: Pumpkin Empanadas Take the Spotlight at Magoffin Home

The Magoffin Home State Historic Site is inviting El Pasoans to celebrate the city’s rich multicultural heritage—one bite at a time.

As part of the statewide America250 food history series, the Magoffin Home is hosting an Empanada Cooking Class on Saturday, September 6, 2025, where participants can learn to make traditional pumpkin empanadas from historic Spanish recipes. The hands-on workshop highlights the influence of 16th-century Spanish explorers and their lasting contributions to the region’s culinary traditions.

The event is more than just a cooking class—it’s a flavorful way to “savor history,” according to organizers. Site staff will guide participants through the cultural origins of the dish, which evolved into a local staple in El Paso’s borderland kitchens.

🎉 All ingredients are provided, and participation costs just $10 per person. Early registration is encouraged, as space is limited.

Presented by the Texas Historical Commission as part of its “Our America, Our Texas, Our El Paso” celebration, the class showcases how food connects communities across generations. It’s one of several events marking the lead-up to the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The Magoffin Home State Historic Site is located at 1120 Magoffin Ave, El Paso, TX 79901.
