Sheriff cites ‘uptick’ in activity after previously praising Trump for slowing immigration

Terrell County Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland said Thursday there has been an uptick in illegal alien activity in the area, following a Highway 90 stop in which a driver allegedly admitted to being in the area to pick up undocumented immigrants.

The incident occurred early Thursday when Terrell County Sheriff’s Office deputies, working in support of Operation Lone Star, stopped to assist a stranded motorist along Highway 90. Sanderson Border Patrol agents were also at the scene. Border Patrol took the driver into custody, and the sheriff’s office impounded the vehicle.

Cleveland’s current warnings contrast with his prior appearances on multiple right-wing media outlets praising former President Donald Trump’s immigration record. Now, he says there is an uptick when he is the one looking for it. Critics argue that framing the situation as an ongoing crisis helps maintain political support and reinforces his image as a front-line responder.

Officials urged residents to report suspicious or illegal activity to the Terrell County Sheriff’s Office to help coordinate a fast response.
