Sul Ross Law Enforcement Academy Focuses on Training for Small-Town and Rural Agencies

For more than four decades, the Sul Ross State University H. Joaquin Jackson Law Enforcement Academy has specialized in preparing officers for small-town and rural policing, emphasizing professionalism and community service in its training programs.

Licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education in May 1982, the academy offers two primary types of training. Its annual basic police academy exceeds the 736-hour Basic Peace Officer course required by TCOLE, qualifying graduates to take the Basic Peace Officer examination. Those who pass with a score of 70 percent or higher receive state certification and are eligible for hire by Texas law enforcement agencies.

The academy also provides continuing education and in-service courses for law enforcement and corrections personnel in its service area. These range from four to 40 hours and are designed to meet TCOLE-mandated training requirements as well as address the specific needs of local agencies.

“Our mission is to serve and train law enforcement personnel in our service area,” the academy states. “We believe the badge is more a symbol of public trust than of authority, and this trust can only be met by individual commitment, dedication, and improvement through education and training.”

The program stresses a community service mindset, professionalism, and ethics, and welcomes constructive feedback from law enforcement, the public, and the university community.

Prospective cadets must complete a pre-screening form to determine if they meet minimum admission standards. The full application process includes extensive paperwork, a physical and psychological examination, fingerprinting, and a background check.

The Law Enforcement Academy office is located on the SRSU campus in rooms MAB 106/109. For more information, call (432) 837-8614 or email lea@sulross.edu.
