A tethered aerostat surveillance balloon has been redeployed along the U.S.-Mexico border near Sanderson, Texas, according to Terrell County Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland.
In a public update, Cleveland said the high-tech balloon system, operated by U.S. Border Patrol, is designed to provide “persistent, wide-area monitoring—day and night.” The system assists agents in detecting and tracking illegal activity across remote and rugged stretches of the border.
The aerostat, which resembles a large, tethered blimp, is part of ongoing efforts to enhance surveillance capabilities in areas with limited ground coverage. It can operate at high altitudes and is equipped with radar and optical sensors.
The re-deployment reflects the continued use of aerial surveillance technology to support border security operations in West Texas.
