The Judd Foundation will celebrate the restoration and reopening of Donald Judd’s Architecture Office in Marfa with a weekend of public programs, tours, and community events on September 20–21.
The festivities begin Friday, September 20, with a building dedication at 6 p.m. at the Architecture Office, featuring remarks by Rainer Judd, President of Judd Foundation, and Flavin Judd, Artistic Director. The building will be open for self-guided visits earlier that day from 12–2 p.m. and again from 5–7 p.m., as well as Saturday, September 21, from 3–5 p.m. All open hours are free and open to the public.
A public discussion on the Architecture Office’s restoration and adaptive reuse will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Crowley Theater, with speakers including Peter Stanley of the Judd Foundation, Troy Schaum of Schaum Architects, Rosalyne Shieh of MIT, and Beatrice Galilee of The World Around. On Saturday at 2 p.m., historian and Princeton visiting lecturer Julian Rose will deliver a lecture titled Donald Judd and Architecture, also at the Crowley Theater. Advance registration is required for both programs.
Capping off Friday’s events will be a community street party on Oak Street between Highland Avenue and Austin Street from 7–9 p.m., featuring barbecue by Mark Scott and live music by Primo Carrasco. The street party is free and open to all.
The restoration of the Architecture Office was made possible by leadership funding from The Brown Foundation, Inc. of Houston, with major support from private donors and the Judd Foundation Board of Directors. Additional support came from The City of Marfa, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and several local and regional partners.
