Alpine Independent School District reported a 95.2% four-year graduation rate for the Class of 2023, well above the statewide average of 90.3%, according to new state education data.
The district, which serves 917 students, also posted a 0% dropout rate for grades 9–12 and maintained a chronic absenteeism rate of 19.4%, slightly below the state average of 20.3%.
While graduation rates remain strong, Alpine ISD faces ongoing challenges in college readiness. Only 22.6% of 2023 graduates met college-ready benchmarks in both reading and math—less than half the statewide rate of 48.4%. The district’s average SAT score was 975, just under the state average of 978. Participation in Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams was also lower than the state average, though Alpine ISD test-takers had a higher passing rate (61.1%) than the state overall (53.3%).
Demographically, Alpine ISD is 62.3% Hispanic, 34.4% white, and less than 1% African American, Asian, or other racial groups. Just under 39% of students are considered at risk of dropping out, and 50.9% are classified as economically disadvantaged—both figures below statewide levels.
Teacher experience in the district averages 12.5 years, higher than the state average of 11.1 years. However, teacher pay remains a concern. The average teacher salary in Alpine ISD is $48,363—$14,111 below the Texas average. Starting salaries and pay for teachers with up to 10 years of experience also fall well below state levels.
