Sul Ross State University junior Cameron Haumea has claimed the 2025 National Championship in Steer Wrestling at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyoming, becoming the first in school history to win the title in the event.
Haumea, a native of Honolulu, posted a four-head total time of 20.6 seconds, winning the national title by nearly five full seconds over runner-up Cole Detton of Montana State University. His consistent performance included times of 4.5, 5.9, 5.5, and a strong 4.7-second finish in the short-go round.
“I’m incredibly honored to bring this championship home for Sul Ross,” Haumea said. “The support from my coaches, teammates and family made this victory possible. I couldn’t have done it without them.”
The championship marks Sul Ross State University’s 27th individual national title, and its first in steer wrestling. Haumea also won steer wrestling titles earlier in the season at the Eastern New Mexico College Rodeo and the Sul Ross College Rodeo, placing in a total of eight events over the year.
Coach C.J. Aragon praised Haumea’s hard work: “Cameron has worked hard for the past two years, and he went out there and made the type of runs he has consistently made all year. We are proud to have him on our team.”
Teammate Colten Leech, a graduate student from Billings, Missouri, placed ninth in Round 2 and won Round 3 with a 4.0-second run, finishing 16th nationally.
The Sul Ross rodeo team closed the season ranked 17th in the nation, continuing a five-year streak of Top 25 finishes. The team also received the Smarty Rodeo Sportsmanship Award, selected by coaches and students at the CNFR.
Sul Ross State University competes in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association at both regional and national levels.
