McDonald Observatory Hiring for Full-Time Custodial Maintenance Role

The University of Texas at Austin’s McDonald Observatory, located 16 miles from Fort Davis in the Davis Mountains, is seeking applicants for a full-time Custodial Maintenance position. The role offers a competitive starting salary of $32,000+, dependent on experience and qualifications, and comes with a comprehensive benefits package.

The successful candidate will provide custodial and grounds services across McDonald Observatory’s buildings and public spaces, including the Visitor Center and domes. Responsibilities include building cleaning, restroom sanitation, granite and sidewalk sweeping, trash abatement, and preparing spaces for special events. The position also involves basic maintenance tasks, work order submissions, supply inventory tracking, and occasional training of new staff.

Applicants must have at least six months of custodial experience, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Weekend and holiday shifts will be rotated among staff. The position may be designated essential for emergency operations.
