Stuart Meyers, a Florida-based real estate developer known in El Paso for helping lead the $100 million restoration of the historic Hotel Paso Del Norte, died in his sleep at his home on June 7. He was 83.
Meyers, founder and CEO of the Meyers Group, spent more than 50 years in real estate development, starting with affordable housing before focusing on luxury apartment projects across Florida. His company entered the El Paso market in 2016 when he partnered with local developer Richard Aguilar to renovate the century-old Downtown hotel. The project took more than three years and reopened in 2020 under Marriott’s Autograph Collection brand.
Before the hotel project, Meyers and his then-wife owned a home in El Paso. He had proposed other projects in the area, including a 22-story tower that was ultimately canceled, and acquired other Downtown properties, including the long-vacant building at 117 W. Overland Ave. Plans for development there were also later scrapped.
The Meyers Group continues to maintain a Downtown El Paso office, though the company currently has no active development projects in the city. Ownership of the firm has passed to Meyers’ children, Jeffrey Meyers and Wendy Crabb.
His funeral was held June 10 in Hollywood, Florida. The family has asked that donations be made in his memory to the Israel Emergency Fund at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.
