Science Mill to Host STEM Survival Camps for Fort Davis Students This June

Two weeklong STEM survival camps are set to take place this June at Fort Davis Elementary, giving upcoming students in grades 3 through 8 the opportunity to explore hands-on science and engineering challenges.

Hosted by the Science Mill, the camps will be held at the Fort Davis Elementary Fine Arts Room, located at 801 State Street. The first session, Camp May Day, will run June 16–20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to students entering grades 3–5 in the 2025–26 school year. The second session, Island Innovators, will follow June 23–27 during the same hours for students entering grades 6–8.

Each camp is centered around a survival-themed island adventure where campers must use STEM knowledge to address real-world challenges, including how to stay alive and address a global crop crisis.

Activities for younger students include learning basic survival skills such as navigation and first aid, building simple batteries and water filtration devices, and creating prosthetic prototypes to help injured animals. Older students will delve into more advanced concepts like generating solar and wind energy, experimenting with soil properties to improve plant growth, and designing adaptive clothing using circuitry and textiles.

The programs aim to foster creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork while reinforcing STEM learning through practical application.
