A series of earthquakes struck southeastern New Mexico and West Texas over the weekend, with shaking reported as far west as El Paso and throughout parts of Jeff Davis County.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the strongest quake—a magnitude-5.4—occurred at 7:47 p.m. local time Saturday. The epicenter was located roughly 37 miles south of Whites City, New Mexico. The following morning, at 11:41 a.m. Sunday, a smaller magnitude-2.6 quake shook the same area.
While the tremors were widely felt across the region, including in neighboring Texas counties, an emergency manager for the county that includes Whites City told CBS News that no dispatch calls or reports of damage were received.
Saturday also saw additional seismic activity in Texas. At 2:58 a.m., a magnitude-3.6 quake was recorded about 22 miles southwest of Lamesa. Later that night, at 9:34 p.m., a magnitude-3.4 earthquake struck approximately 25 miles west of Mentone in Loving County.
The U.S. Geological Survey continues to monitor the seismic activity in the region.
