A student-built medical clinic created by volunteers from Texas A&M University’s BUILD program is set to be delivered to Jeff Davis County this spring, part of a global effort to provide accessible healthcare in underserved areas.
The self-contained clinic — constructed from a 40-foot shipping container and fully outfitted with medical infrastructure — was one of seven honored at a dedication ceremony in December. Held in College Station, the ceremony paid tribute to fallen Aggie service members and long-serving BUILD volunteers. Each Texas Aggie Medical Clinic (TAMC) is named in their memory, a tradition that gives personal meaning to a global outreach mission.
Though many TAMCs are shipped abroad, including to Ukraine, Nigeria, Kenya, and Jordan, this year’s spring clinics will serve closer to home: one in Raymondville and the other in rural West Texas.
Jeff Davis County, with limited local access to advanced medical care, will receive the unit thanks to the BUILD program’s partnership with Houston-based nonprofit Medical Bridges. That organization will stock the clinic with approximately $50,000 worth of medical supplies before deployment.
“This clinic represents a decade-long commitment from thousands of Aggie students who have volunteered their time in the spirit of service,” said BUILD CEO Lauryn Kastenschmidt ’25. “It will directly benefit West Texans while carrying the legacy of those who served.”
Each TAMC includes triage and treatment rooms, air conditioning, heating, generators, lighting, and dedicated lab space. BUILD has already deployed 42 clinics across Texas and 20 countries since 2013. The Jeff Davis County deployment will be its latest milestone.
The upcoming arrival comes as county leaders explore sustainable ways to support health services in remote areas. While the clinic will not replace emergency or hospital care, it’s expected to play a role in outreach services and expand capabilities during local health initiatives.
