The Sul Ross Skyline, the student newspaper of Sul Ross State University, earned three first-place awards at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) conference held April 10–12 in San Marcos.
Alyn Covington received top honors in Editorial Cartoons, Maya Tinajero won in Editorials, and Dawon Beard and Brooke Manuel were recognized for Web Design.
Skyline adviser Sid Balman joined Editor Eliya Alvidrez and media faculty from Baylor University in leading a panel discussion on Freedom of the Press during the event.
“We are punching above our weight for the fourth year in a row,” said Balman. “This is the largest organization of its kind in Texas.”
TIPA is the state’s largest collegiate media association, drawing 300 to 600 student journalists and faculty advisers each spring for a three-day convention that includes over 40 workshops and 30 on-site contests designed to test skills in real-time reporting situations.
