Stephen Hummel, the Dark Skies Initiative Coordinator for McDonald Observatory, has been named the first Astronomer in Residence for 2025 by the Grand Canyon Conservancy. Hummel will begin his residency at Grand Canyon National Park on February 1 and continue through March 14.
Hummel, a researcher with The University of Texas at Austin’s McDonald Observatory, focuses on preserving the pristine dark skies of the Big Bend region in Texas and northern Mexico. His work has been instrumental in promoting awareness about light pollution and its impact on astronomy and the natural environment.
As part of his residency, Hummel will host a series of educational and interactive events for visitors to the park, aiming to highlight the importance of dark skies and share his expertise in astronomy.
“This residency is a unique opportunity to engage with people about the significance of preserving our night skies,” Hummel said in a statement. “The Grand Canyon provides a perfect setting to inspire appreciation for the natural world and the universe beyond.”
The Astronomer in Residence program, developed by the Grand Canyon Conservancy, invites experts in the field of astronomy to live and work at the national park while sharing their knowledge through public events and outreach.
