Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson is under scrutiny for inconsistent responses regarding public records requests about border security grant funds. According to a state news release, Brewster County received $926,771 in Operation Lone Star (OLS) funding in fiscal year 2022. Despite the significant taxpayer dollars involved, the sheriff’s office has yet to provide records detailing how these funds—or grants from subsequent years—were spent.
When initially approached under the Texas Public Information Act (TPIA), Dodson’s office deflected responsibility, claiming the records were maintained by the Texas Governor’s Office. However, in a direct message to the Big Bend Times publisher, Dodson admitted that his office holds “hundreds of pages” of documents related to the grants, contradicting earlier statements.
Despite this acknowledgment, the sheriff’s office has not provided the requested records or sought a ruling from the Texas Attorney General, as required by law when withholding information. The shifting explanations have raised questions about the sheriff’s commitment to transparency and whether public funds have been managed responsibly.
OLS and Operation Stonegarden grants are critical resources for rural law enforcement, funding overtime pay, equipment purchases, and interagency coordination. Without access to records, taxpayers are left in the dark about whether these funds are achieving their intended goals.
Critics argue that Dodson’s contradictory responses undermine public trust and highlight the need for greater accountability in how taxpayer dollars are managed. Calls for the sheriff to comply with transparency laws continue as questions over the funds remain unresolved.
