Sul Ross State University Announces 2025 Guided Hikes on Hancock Hill

Sul Ross State University (SRSU) invites outdoor enthusiasts to join a series of guided hikes on Hancock Hill, offering breathtaking views and insights into the region’s rich natural and cultural history. Each hike features a unique theme led by knowledgeable guides who will share their expertise with participants.

  • April 5: Birds of Hancock Hill – Guide: Maureen Frank
  • May 3: Native Plants – Guide: Helen Snook
  • June 7: National Trails Day – Volunteer Opportunity (Details TBD)
  • September 13: Bugs – Guide: Chris Ritzi
  • October 11: Water Resources – Guide: Kevin Urbanczyk
  • November 22: Arthike: Alpine from Above – Guide: Matt Walter
  • December 6: Vistas through Geologic Time – Guide: Jesse Kelsch

Hike Details

  • Location: Hancock Hill Trailhead, 700 N Bird Street, Alpine, TX 79830
  • Time: 9:00 – 11:00 AM
  • Distance: 1.8 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 383 feet
  • Difficulty: Moderately strenuous with loose rocks and steep inclines
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Capacity: 12 participants per hike, sign-up required
  • Cost: Free

Preparation Tips

Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy, close-toed shoes, long pants, and sun protection. Bringing 1-2 liters of water and dressing in layers is also advised. Please note that hikes are contingent on weather and will not visit the iconic Sul Ross Desk.
