Davis Mountains State Park Kicks Off 2025 With Mile-High First Day Hike

Davis Mountains State Park welcomed 43 adults and 11 children to its annual Mile-High First Day Hike, an event that combined fresh air, scenic views, and a brisk 2.85-mile trek to mark the start of the new year. Participants enjoyed the crisp mountain air at an elevation of approximately 5,200 feet, which added a touch of challenge to the morning outing.

The hike, slightly longer than anticipated, brought smiles, camaraderie, and a few tired faces as attendees embraced the spirit of the day. The event continues a tradition that dates back to 1992, when Massachusetts state park ranger Patrick Flynn introduced the concept. By 2012, First Day Hikes were taking place in all 50 states, encouraging outdoor enthusiasts to celebrate the new year on the trail.

Davis Mountains State Park is managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife and is renowned for its rugged beauty and rich biodiversity. First Day Hikes at the park provide a unique opportunity for locals and visitors alike to experience its natural wonders while fostering a sense of community.

Texas Parks and Wildlife staff shared a message of hope for 2025, wishing all trail-goers joy, growth, and plenty of adventures in the year ahead.
