The Brewster County Sheriff’s Office is hiring for two Detention Officer positions at the Brewster County Jail. These roles offer a chance to serve the community by maintaining a safe and secure detention facility while upholding the standards set by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
Position Details
Chain of Command:
Detention Officers report to the Detention Corporal, Detention Sergeants, Jail Administrators, Chief Deputy, and Sheriff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform daily duties within the jail, including guarding assigned areas and ensuring safety.
- Conduct headcounts, security checks, and investigations of incidents occurring within the facility.
- Respond to emergencies, such as altercations or suicidal tendencies, and take appropriate action.
- Transport prisoners, secure crime scenes, and prepare reports.
- Maintain departmental equipment and enforce detention policies.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Ability to make quick decisions and handle stressful situations.
- Working knowledge of criminal and traffic codes.
- Proficiency in computers and effective communication skills.
- Must obtain a Basic Detention Officers Certificate within the first year, as per the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (T.C.O.L.E.).
- Valid Texas driver’s license required; bilingual skills are a plus.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
