The Alpine Fightin’ Bucks basketball team kicked off their District 4-3A season with an impressive road win against Tornillo High School on Friday, January 10. The game was a high-energy contest, with both teams setting a fast pace early.
Tornillo opened the scoring with a deep three-pointer, but Alpine quickly responded as Isaiah Jimenez (#3) hit a three of his own off an assist from Ferris Daley (#30). A steal and a slam dunk by Dae Hardwick (#3) put the Bucks up 5-3. After an exciting first quarter, Alpine held a narrow 17-13 lead.
The second quarter continued as a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading baskets. At halftime, Alpine clung to a slim 33-29 advantage.
Third Quarter Struggles
The third quarter proved challenging for the Fightin’ Bucks. Tornillo capitalized on Alpine’s eight turnovers and drew seven team fouls, cutting into the lead. Despite the struggles, Alpine managed to stay ahead, leading 44-38 heading into the final quarter.
“Credit to Coach Luis Vega of Tornillo for having a solid game plan that kept his guys in it,” said Alpine’s coach. “Although our kids were disappointed with their play for the first three quarters, I knew we had a run in us. We just had to take care of the basketball and defend without fouling.”
Fourth Quarter Dominance
Alpine came alive in the fourth quarter, showcasing their true potential. At the six-minute mark, Alpine led 49-41. A critical defensive stop led to a fastbreak dunk by Kelton Tarrant (#23), sparking an 18-5 run that sealed the victory.
“That Fightin’ Bucks basketball team that showed up in the fourth quarter tonight is who we are!” the coach added. “Great to get our first district win, but we know we still have work to do.”
The final score was Alpine 67, Tornillo 46.
