The Sul Ross State University men’s and women’s basketball teams both faced tough losses against Lubbock Christian University in Lone Star Conference action Thursday at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas.
Men’s Game:
The Sul Ross men’s team (0-8 LSC, 1-12 overall) fell 84-54 to Lubbock Christian (6-1 LSC, 11-4 overall). The game remained competitive for the first eight minutes, with junior Deon Brown hitting a three-pointer to give the Lobos an early 7-4 lead. However, a 9-2 run by LCU midway through the first half shifted momentum to the home team, who never relinquished control.
Sul Ross outperformed LCU in defensive rebounding, pulling down 22 defensive boards compared to just seven offensive rebounds for the Chaps, limiting LCU to six second-chance points. Brown finished with nine points, including two triples, while senior Ethan Yancy contributed nine points and seven rebounds. LCU’s Ty Caswell led all scorers with 18 points and added two steals.
The Lobos continue their road stretch on Saturday, Jan. 11, against Midwestern State, with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
Women’s Game:
The Sul Ross women’s team (1-7 LSC, 2-9 overall) faced a tough challenge against #18-ranked Lubbock Christian (7-1 LSC, 13-3 overall), losing 78-41. Senior Cheyanne Bonilla opened the scoring for the Lobos early in the game, but the Lady Chaps responded with a dominant performance, including a 12-point scoring run that sealed their victory.
Sul Ross displayed strong defensive rebounding, collecting 22 boards and holding LCU to only three second-chance points. Junior Melody Martinez led the Lobos with 11 points, while graduate student Caitlyn Corley added nine points and seven rebounds. LCU’s Grace Foster and Aubrey Robertson each scored 15 points to lead the Lady Chaps.
The Lobos will remain on the road to face Midwestern State on Saturday, Jan. 11, with tip-off set for 1:00 p.m.
Both Sul Ross teams continue to seek improvements as they navigate the competitive Lone Star Conference schedule.
