If you’ve ever wondered about the “Fort” in Fort Stockton, wonder no more! Historic Fort Stockton, located on the east side of town, is a fascinating site where Texas history comes to life. This historic landmark consists of original and reconstructed military buildings, including Officers’ Row, the Guardhouse, Enlisted Men’s Barracks, and Parade Grounds, all offering a glimpse into 19th-century frontier life.
A Fort Steeped in History
The fort’s origins date back to 1858, when Camp Stockton was established by the U.S. Army to protect settlers and travelers near Comanche Springs, a vital water source along important trails. The site moved to its current location in 1867, under the command of Colonel Edward Hatch and was garrisoned by the 9th Cavalry, famously known as the Buffalo Soldiers.
The fort played a crucial role in safeguarding the region during the Indian Wars until its closure in 1886, as the frontier expanded further west. Of the original 35 buildings, four still remain today: the Guardhouse and three Officers’ Quarters. The restored OQ #7 gives visitors a unique look at adobe construction techniques used during the era.
Preservation and Restoration
The City of Fort Stockton, along with the Fort Stockton Historical Society, has worked tirelessly to restore and reconstruct parts of the fort. Extensive archaeological excavations have helped preserve its legacy, making it a must-see destination for history buffs and travelers alike. Listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, Historic Fort Stockton is a testament to the area’s rich past.
