With the December graduation of former Editor-in-Chief Dawson Beard, the Skyline has entered 2025 under new leadership. Eliya Alvidrez, previously a reporter for the publication, has stepped into the role of Editor-in-Chief, while freshman Maya Tinajero has been named Desk Chief, a position unfilled since Summer 2024. This marks the first time since Spring 2023 that two women hold the Skyline‘s top editorial positions.
“Dawson did an amazing job, and he’ll be missed,” said Skyline Advisor Sidney Balman. “I’m confident Eliya and Maya will continue to uphold the tradition of excellence in Skyline reporting.”
Alvidrez, a senior Communications major from El Paso, joined the Skyline in September 2024. Her background includes reporting at Southern Nazarene University while playing collegiate soccer before transitioning to journalism. At the Skyline, she has delivered standout articles like “Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach Steps Down After Physical Incident” and “Dryer Fire in Lobo Village 2.”
“I’m more than grateful for this opportunity,” Alvidrez said. “I hope to continue building on Dawson’s legacy while fostering a newsroom where everyone thrives.”
Tinajero, a freshman Natural Resource Management major also from El Paso, quickly earned recognition for her work after joining the Skyline last fall. Despite her limited journalism background—a single high school course taken online—her impactful pieces, such as “Moldy Dorms at SRSU” and “OPINION: The Unfair Stigma of Being a Male Survivor,” secured her promotion to Desk Chief.
“I’m excited to grow as a writer while telling stories that matter to our audience,” Tinajero said. “Journalism is vital, and I hope to connect with younger readers by covering issues that affect their lives.”
The new leadership team brings fresh energy and dedication to the Skyline newsroom, promising continued excellence in campus reporting.
