Marfa and Alpine Residents Notified About Galvanized and Unknown Water Pipes

Residents in Marfa whose water pipes were identified as galvanized or “unknown” in a recent lead pipe inventory received hand-delivered letters in December, notifying them of potential health risks and necessary actions. The City of Alpine also issued similar notifications late last year.

EPA and TCEQ Requirements

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)required local water utilities to submit service line inventories by October 16, 2024, identifying lead and galvanized pipes within their systems. These types of pipes pose significant health risks due to the potential for lead contamination.

Health Concerns Highlighted

The letters explained the dangers of lead exposure, including behavioral disabilities in children and increased risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney issues, and nervous system problems in adults. Recommendations included avoiding the use of hot water for cooking or drinking and using proper filtration methods to reduce exposure.

Marfa Water Service Line Findings

Out of the 1,197 total water service lines in Marfa:

  • 0% (0 lines) were identified as lead.
  • 5.3% (46 lines) were identified as galvanized, requiring replacement.
  • 42.2% (505 lines) were identified as unknown.
  • 54% (646 lines) were identified as non-lead.

City’s Efforts and Next Steps

Marfa’s Public Utilities Supervisor, Chuck Salgado, explained that residents with galvanized or unknown pipes were prioritized for notification. His department hand-delivered letters and is compiling a list of affected addresses for publication on the city’s website, allowing residents to check their status online.

For further inquiries, residents can contact Salgado via email at csalgado@cityofmarfa.com or by phone at 432-729-4316.

The initial inventory was conducted using historical records and maps rather than direct excavation. A comprehensive inventory and replacement plan for all lead and galvanized pipes must be submitted by November 1, 2027.

City of Alpine Notifications

Similar letters were sent to Alpine residents last year as part of the same regulatory requirements, underscoring the region-wide effort to address potential lead contamination and improve public health.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take appropriate measures to ensure their water supply remains safe.
