Brewster County Moves to Correct $264K Tax Error Affecting Alpine ISD

According to the Alpine Avalanche, the Brewster County Commissioners Court held a special meeting on December 30 to address a significant tax error impacting Alpine Independent School District (AISD). The issue, attributed to a “vendor software error” at the Brewster County Appraisal District, resulted in the miscalculation of tax limitations for homeowners aged 65 and older or with disabilities, as outlined in Section 11.26 of the Texas Tax Code.

The error led to overpayments totaling $264,896.37, prompting the court to issue an order directing corrections to the 2023 AISD tax roll and refunds to affected property owners. Brewster County Judge Greg Henington assured the public that the county has sufficient funds to manage the refunds without major disruptions. Refunds will be processed automatically and are expected to be issued by early March.

AISD Superintendent Michelle Rinehart noted that the error compounds the district’s existing financial challenges, including a projected deficit and persistent underfunding by the state. She highlighted that the tax miscalculation effectively nullifies $300,000 in revenue gains from recent district efforts, further straining the budget and impacting staff compensation.

The court order ensures compliance with the Texas Tax Code and reflects adjustments approved during the 88th Legislature’s Second Called Session, which expanded tax relief for qualifying homeowners. AISD and Brewster County are exploring whether errors and omissions insurance can offset the financial losses incurred.

Despite the setback, AISD remains committed to recovering the funds and maintaining its focus on student and staff support. For further updates, residents are encouraged to contact the Brewster County Tax Assessor-Collector’s office or AISD administration.
