On December 10, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) approved Kokernot Field’s Determination of Eligibility, a significant step toward listing the Alpine landmark on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
The eligibility application was submitted on November 18 by Post Oak Preservation Solutions, contracted by the city of Alpine in August to pursue NRHP designation for both Kokernot Field and Downtown Alpine.
According to Ellis Mumford-Russell, a partner at Post Oak, the THC found Kokernot Field eligible under Criterion A for its role as a local hub of semi-pro, collegiate, and youth baseball from 1947 to 1968. The commission described it as “a great property.”
Post Oak aims to submit a draft of the formal National Register Nomination to the THC by March 2025. While additional steps are required for final designation, Mumford-Russell expressed confidence that Kokernot Field will ultimately secure its place on the National Register.
In January, Post Oak staff will conduct historic surveys of Downtown Alpine as part of the broader preservation effort.
