The Marfa Independent School District Board of Trustees has appointed Jay Foster and Philip Boyd to fill two vacant positions on the school board during their regular meeting on Monday.
Foster, a retired Marfa ISD teacher and coach, was appointed to Place 3, left vacant by the resignation of former Vice President Yolanda Jurado. Boyd, vice president of science and research at the Dixon Water Foundation, was appointed to Place 5, following Paul Hunt’s resignation.
Jurado resigned on November 18 without providing a reason, prompting the board to solicit letters of interest from the community. The board also accepted Hunt’s resignation on Monday, thanking him for his service.
Foster, a longtime educator and announcer for Shorthorn football games, will serve the remainder of Jurado’s term, with the Place 3 seat up for election in May 2027. Boyd, who has a background in range and wildlife management, will serve the remainder of Hunt’s term, with the Place 5 seat up for election in May 2025.
The board noted the strong qualifications of both appointees and chose to fill both vacancies simultaneously rather than reopening the application process following Hunt’s resignation. The appointments ensure the board is fully staffed as it continues its work for the district.
