Big Bend Natural History Association Enhances Visitor Experience Through Educational Bookstores

Located within each of Big Bend National Park’s five visitor centers, the Big Bend Natural History Association (BBNHA) operates bookstores that do more than just sell souvenirs. As a private, non-profit organization, BBNHA provides visitors with a wealth of educational resources, including books, maps, videos, and high-quality keepsakes designed to deepen the understanding of the park’s rich environmental and historical tapestry.

The significance of purchasing from these bookstores extends beyond acquiring a memento; it supports the park directly. All profits from sales are funneled back into Big Bend, benefiting park goals and interpretive operations. This unique model not only helps sustain the park’s educational efforts but also ensures that visitors’ expenditures contribute to the conservation and enhancement of park facilities.

Members of the BBNHA enjoy a 15% discount on purchases, both in-store and online, with the membership benefits extending to many other national parks. This incentive is part of the association’s broader aim to foster a community of informed advocates for the park’s preservation.

Founded in 1956 and authorized by Congress, the BBNHA has contributed over two million dollars to the National Park Service, supporting not only Big Bend but also the Amistad National Recreation Area and the Rio Grande Wild & Scenic River.

For visitors looking to deepen their knowledge of Big Bend or those simply wishing to support the park’s ongoing educational and conservation initiatives, a stop at one of the BBNHA’s bookstores is a must.
