Amistad National Recreation Area Celebrates a Tripling in Monarch Butterfly Numbers

This year, Amistad National Recreation Area emerged as a significant hub for the Monarch butterfly migration, recording an impressive count of 12,492 butterflies, which is triple the number from 2023. Park staff, engaged in early morning Monarch roosting surveys throughout October, noted these remarkable numbers.

The figure reported reflects the count of Monarch butterflies that were stationary and roosting on trees within the park. It does not include those butterflies that were active and flying, suggesting that the actual number of Monarchs present could be even higher.

The substantial increase in Monarch numbers at Amistad is a positive sign, indicating that the park provides a vital habitat for these migratory butterflies. Park officials and visitors are eagerly anticipating next year’s migration to see if this encouraging trend continues. The park continues to play a crucial role in the conservation of the Monarch butterfly, offering a safe haven during their extensive migration journey. Stay tuned for more updates and how you can help support these magnificent creatures.
