33rd Annual Black-eyed Pea Off Raises Over $4,300 for Terlingua Graduates

The Terlingua Ghost Town came alive on January 1, 2025, as the community gathered for the 33rd Annual Black-eyed Pea Off. This cherished event not only celebrates the new year with a traditional serving of black-eyed peas, believed to bring prosperity and good fortune, but also supports an important cause. This year, the event successfully raised $4,310, which will fund continuing education scholarships for graduates of Terlingua School.

Hosted in the heart of the Downtown Terlingua Ghost Town, the event featured local music, a “Hot Date” raffle, and, of course, the star of the show—black-eyed peas. For a modest $10 donation, attendees enjoyed these delicious peas alongside festivities that underscored the community’s commitment to supporting its young people.

The success of the Black-eyed Pea Off could not have been achieved without the generous contributions from local sponsors such as Lajitas Resort, Hotel Paisano, Gage Hotel, and many others. These businesses, along with numerous volunteers and musicians, ensured the event was not only a celebration but also a significant contribution to the local youth’s educational opportunities.

This annual event not only marks the start of the new year but also highlights the strong community spirit prevalent in Terlingua. It serves as a reminder of the community’s dedication to nurturing its own by supporting academic and professional aspirations of its young residents.

Looking forward to next year, the organizers and the community hope to continue this tradition of goodwill and celebration, inviting everyone to partake in what has become a pivotal event in Terlingua’s cultural calendar.
