Big Bend National Park Celebrates Remarkable Volunteer Contributions in 2024

Big Bend National Park proudly reflects on the significant contributions made by its volunteers during 2024. As the new year begins, the park is eager to highlight the dedication and hard work of these individuals who have been instrumental in preserving the natural beauty of the park.

Volunteer Impact by the Numbers In 2024, 138 volunteers generously dedicated a total of 41,353 hours to Big Bend National Park. Each volunteer, on average, committed about 300 hours, showcasing a remarkable dedication to supporting the park’s operations and mission.

Roles and Responsibilities of Volunteers Most volunteers at Big Bend are full-time participants who receive an RV site in exchange for their service. They work in various critical roles, including Visitor Center and Campground Hosts, and as part of Backcountry and River Patrols. Other positions include Science and Resource Management, Preventative Search and Rescue, and Maintenance. These volunteers typically serve for 3- or 6-month periods, contributing 32 hours per week to ensure the park remains a clean, safe, and welcoming place for visitors throughout the year.
