Smoke in the Mountains, a cherished community event that supports first responders in Jeff Davis County, has announced its upcoming dates for 2025. The fundraiser will take place on June 6-7, with registration opening on February 2, 2025. This annual cookoff not only brings together barbecue enthusiasts from across the region but also honors the courageous efforts of local volunteers during emergencies.
Founded in 2012 by Sara Adams after the devastating Rockhouse Fire, Smoke in the Mountains has grown into a significant non-profit organization. The Rockhouse Fire, which swept through over 300,000 acres in 2011, highlighted the crucial role of first responders in this remote part of Texas. Adams started the event as a way to give back to those who risk their lives to protect the community, setting a precedent for annual support through a fun and engaging barbecue competition.
The event, traditionally held at an RV park south of Fort Davis, has become a staple in the community’s calendar. It celebrates the spirit of competition and camaraderie among barbecue teams, many of which have participated since the inaugural event. The loss of founders Sara Adams and supporter Robert Rubio in recent years has only deepened the community’s commitment to the cause, rallying more support and participation to continue their legacies.
Last year, the event successfully raised $50,000 for first responders, a testament to the community’s generosity and the event’s growing impact. The 2025 edition aims to build on this success, ensuring that the vital services provided by first responders continue to receive much-needed support.
The board of Smoke in the Mountains, including President Jennifer Webster and Vice President Trae Dutchover, along with other dedicated members, are gearing up to make the 2025 event even more memorable. The community and visitors alike are encouraged to mark their calendars and prepare to join in the festivities that not only offer delicious food and entertainment but also support a noble cause.
