A new chapter in law enforcement began in El Paso County as Sheriff Oscar Ugarte took the oath of office during a spirited inaugural ceremony on December 31, 2024. The event, which doubled as a New Year’s celebration, was officiated by Judge Alyssa Garcia Perez of the 210th Judicial District Court.
The ceremony took place at the El Paso County Courthouse, where friends, family, and residents gathered to witness the transition of leadership. The evening commenced with an open-door reception, culminating in a special New Year’s countdown, setting the stage for Sheriff Ugarte’s historic swearing-in.
Constable-Elect Frank Almada, representing Precinct 1, served as the emcee, infusing the ceremony with warmth and excitement. As the clock struck midnight, Sheriff Ugarte, alongside his command staff, deputies, and detention officers, pledged their commitment to serve and protect the community under the watchful eyes of an enthusiastic crowd.
In his inaugural address, Sheriff Ugarte articulated a clear vision for his tenure, aiming to make El Paso “the safest community in the country.” He emphasized collaboration with his team and the community, stating, “We will do things right and with pride, building a department that sets the bar higher for law enforcement nationwide.”
Sheriff Ugarte’s agenda focuses on equipping his team with essential resources, fostering robust partnerships across various governmental levels, and maintaining transparency and integrity within the Sheriff’s Office. He reassured the community, saying, “The trust you’ve placed in me is something I don’t take lightly. I promise to lead with honesty and dedication, and I am excited to roll up my sleeves and get to work.”
The evening also featured a presentation by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard, symbolizing the pride and honor that define the force. With his leadership team by his side, Sheriff Ugarte is poised to address the challenges ahead, ensuring safety, security, and trust across El Paso County.
