Alpine Emergency Services Board Approves New Member and FY2025 Budget in Final 2024 Meeting

The Alpine Emergency Services Board (AESB) concluded its final session of 2024 with key decisions on December 19, at 5:30 p.m., involving the appointment of a new board member and the approval of the FY2025 budget. The meeting, held at the board’s headquarters, saw full attendance with Aaron Rodriguez participating remotely due to illness.

During the session, the board addressed the vacancy left by the untimely passing of Paul Loeffler. Mark Rose, nominated by Brewster County Judge Greg Henington and known for his leadership during the Bastrop fires as the GM of Bluebonnet Electric, was unanimously appointed to fill the position. Rose’s extensive experience in collaborating with firefighters in crisis situations was a decisive factor in his nomination.

The board also conducted officer elections for FY2025, nominating Rusty Moore as chairman, Carla Spencer as secretary, Stacey Wood as treasurer, and Aaron Rodriguez continuing as vice-chair. All nominations were unanimously approved following a motion by Moore and a second from Rodriguez.

Chief James Etchison of the Alpine Volunteer Fire Department presented a detailed budget for the upcoming fiscal year, outlining a total of $100,000, with expected costs at $109,000. Despite this, the budget is balanced with $15,000 covered by grants and about $5,000 in donations, with additional funds anticipated. The discussion focused on ensuring a residual fund of at least $25,000 for unforeseen expenses, emphasizing the importance of building financial security over time.

The proposed budget includes allocations for various operational costs, such as vehicle maintenance and office supplies, as well as for community support activities like providing assistance to stranded motorists. Etchison highlighted new initiatives like the purchase of AVFD merchandise for community representation and a goodwill/charity fund designed to offer immediate help in emergencies.

The board approved the FY2025 budget, with Rodriguez noting his plan to present it to the Alpine City Council on January 7 for final approval regarding their funding share.

The next regular meeting of the Alpine Emergency Service Board is scheduled for January 21 at 5:30 p.m., where the board will continue its mission of overseeing critical emergency services and community safety initiatives in Alpine.
