Unlock the mysteries of survival in the harsh Chihuahuan Desert with the “Desert Adapters Hike” at Davis Mountains State Park. Scheduled for Friday, December 13, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM, this educational hike offers a deep dive into the fascinating adaptations of the desert’s flora and fauna.
During this 1.5-hour journey along the challenging Montezuma Quail Trail, participants will learn why many desert plants are armed with spikes or thorns and how animals like javelinas manage to eat prickly pears despite their defenses. The trail features a strenuous one-mile route with a steep incline and decline, making hiking shoes or boots and trekking poles essential for those with mobility issues.
The hike will begin at the Emory Oak Wildlife Viewing Area. Participants are advised to bring hiking shoes, water, a hat, and sunscreen to ensure comfort and safety during the excursion. The event is free for campers or day users with a permit, though a daily entrance fee of $6.00 per adult applies, except for those holding a Texas State Park Pass which covers the entire carload.
