The State of Texas has completed a significant land purchase in the Big Bend region, acquiring the 353,785-acre Brewster Ranch for $164.6 million—$81 million less than the original asking price of $245.6 million. This purchase, facilitated by the Texas General Land Office (GLO), marks the largest property transaction in Texas history, according to records obtained by Marfa Public Radio through a Texas Public Information Act request.
Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition, stating, “By securing this large swath of land along our southern border, the GLO is not only blocking foreign adversaries from purchasing this land but also ensuring that this mineral-rich property will generate revenue for the school children of Texas.”
Situated adjacent to Big Bend National Park and the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area, Brewster Ranch features a varied landscape that includes desert, river areas, and mountains. This diverse environment is crucial for conservation efforts and offers multiple uses, including agriculture and recreational activities such as hunting and wildlife viewing.
The acquisition underscores the GLO’s ongoing commitment to managing state lands effectively, aiming to provide a sustainable revenue stream for Texas’ educational programs while safeguarding its natural heritage.
