The Alpine Fightin’ Buck Varsity boys basketball team kicked off their road season with a decisive victory against the Van Horn Eagles on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. The Fightin’ Bucks showcased a strong defensive game, defeating the Eagles with a final score of 68-24.
Throughout the game, Alpine maintained a tight defense, holding Van Horn to single digits in each quarter and dominating the boards with a ten-rebound advantage. The Eagles, a younger team with mostly freshmen and sophomores, struggled against Alpine’s seasoned players, committing 29 turnovers under pressure.
Although the Fightin’ Bucks did not perform as well from the three-point line, their interior game was formidable. They capitalized on their size advantage inside the paint, shooting an impressive 60% from two-point range (24-40). Additionally, their free-throw accuracy was notable, hitting 11 out of 14 shots for a 78 percent success rate.
Head coach’s comments reflected satisfaction with the team’s performance, particularly praising their defensive intensity and versatility in scoring. “Although we didn’t shoot it well from deep, we had multiple players step up, and we found different ways to score the basketball, particularly through our transition, which is something we stressed leading up to this contest,” the coach stated.
Looking ahead, the Fightin’ Bucks face a challenging matchup against San Elizario on Friday, December 6, 2024. San Elizario is eager to avenge last year’s 57-45 loss, promising a competitive game. The Alpine team recognizes the need for continuous improvement to achieve their season goals.
Leading scorers for Alpine included Ferris Daley with 19 points, followed by Dae Hardwick and Zane Wash, each contributing 10 points. Kelton Tarrant added 9 points, with Tae Hardwick rounding out the top scorers with 8 points.
The Alpine community is encouraged to support the Fightin’ Bucks as they continue their season with high hopes and strong team dynamics.
