Explore the Charms of West Texas with Callie Fuqua’s New Children’s Book

Fort Davis is set to celebrate the literary debut of Callie Fuqua, a local children’s book author, at the St. Joseph Arts & Crafts Fair this Friday, November 29. Fuqua will be showcasing her new picture book, “Goodnight, West Texas,” a delightful journey through the iconic landscapes and historical landmarks of West Texas.

Born and raised in Midland, Callie Fuqua is a sixth-generation Texan with deep roots in the region. She brings a lifetime of experiences and memories to her writing, having explored West Texas extensively from a young age. Now a mother of three and a former elementary educator, Fuqua aims to share the beauty of West Texas with young readers, helping them discover the region’s unique culture and geography.

“Goodnight, West Texas” features vivid illustrations by Richard Cowdrey, a New York Times bestselling artist known for his work on the “Fiona the Hippo” and “Marley the Dog” series. The book takes readers on a visual tour of West Texas, from the Marfa Lights and Big Bend’s scenic vistas to the oil derricks of Midland and the historic Hotel Settles. It offers a chance for children to visit, in dreams and reality, places like the Monahans Sandhills and the Concho River.

During an interview with Texas Standard, Fuqua explained her decision to cover all of West Texas in the book, wanting to highlight its vast cultural and geographical diversity. She selected each location based on its significance and recognizability, aiming to educate and inspire curiosity among young readers. The book also includes special nods to local heritage, such as an illustration featuring her family members who are involved in the oil and gas industry.

“Goodnight, West Texas” is not only a bedtime story but an educational tool that Fuqua hopes will foster a deeper appreciation for the region. To further enrich the reading experience, her website will feature facts about each landmark mentioned in the book, providing valuable learning resources for parents and teachers.

As the sun sets over West Texas this Friday, join Callie Fuqua at the St. Joseph Arts & Crafts Fair in Fort Davis to celebrate the launch of “Goodnight, West Texas.” It’s an opportunity for the community and visitors to connect with the author and bring home a book that beautifully illustrates the essence of West Texas.
